The word “amazing” is highly over used. However, if you peruse a new book in the children’s collection called The Animal Book: A Collection of the Fastest, Fiercest, Toughest, Cleverest, Shyest---and Most Surprising Animals on Earth by Steve Jenkins, you will find that its appropriate use is for this kind of experience. The work is a stunning masterpiece. You will be hooked when you read the very first page.
When Steve Jenkins was 6 years old, he was given a copy of Life magazine. He proceeded to cut out illustrations of giant tortoises and blue-footed boobies. He made his own journal with the pictures, glue and graph paper. He has not looked back since.
Every picture of each animal is unique, playful and irresistible in this volume. The back of the book is devoted to how Steve creates a book and what paper he uses to make his pictures (e.g. The blue whale is make with a blue ink, a plank of wood, recycled newspaper and paper from Japan.)
One can open this book to any page and be captivated. Steve does all of the art work and checks and re-checks his facts for accuracy. His wife, Robin Page, is a frequent collaborator with him.
CARL has 19 of Steve’s books including a favorite of many, Actual Size. (The cover of the book features a gorilla’s hand---substantially larger than a child’s hand or an adult hand.)
Please come to the library soon to borrow this book as well as some of Steve’s other books. You will be delighted!
