Print off or bookmark this excellent list of Google search tips prepared by Nancy Stimson, Outreach Services Librarian, UCSD Biomedical Library. These tips include strategies for limiting your results to authoritative sources and placing your search terms in a context that better ensures desired results.
Stimson makes two further points well worth heeding:
1. "People usually search Google by using the main search box or the Google toolbar, and often miss the advanced search page, command search capability, and other Google tools."
2. "Not everything can be found in Google. The “invisible web” often isn’t searched, as well as, obviously, materials that aren’t online. There are benefits in trying other search engines. Also, local, public and academic libraries have many valuable resources readily available, which people should explore."
